Dental scaling and polishing is the process of removing plaque and tartar deposits that have accumulated on the teeth and polishing the smooth tooth surfaces. When visiting the dentist for routine cleaning (prophylaxis), this procedure is carried out.
What is it?
Scaling and polishing of the teeth are procedures that happen during a routine prophylaxis appointment with the dentist. Scaling is a non-invasive technique for removing dental calculus and plaque from the teeth. Teeth are polished with a hand tool at a slow speed to make them shiny and smooth. Anyone can benefit from these procedures, but people with periodontal disease benefit the most.
What happen durring the process?
Several different instruments are used during dental scaling and polishing for various tasks. Large tartar deposits are frequently first removed using the ticklish vibrations that ultrasonic devices often produce. The smaller tartar deposits are then scraped away with hand tools using a moderate amount of pressure. The polishing process is then completed slowly using a soft motorized tool and a unique toothpaste.
